Service your suspension

Stay in Control

Whenever the topic of maintenance is considered, oil, tires, and chains are the usual suspects that come to mind. The fact that your suspension needs service every now and then can be overlooked, but it shouldn’t. And here’s why.

Stay in Control
Your bike’s suspension plays a big role in keeping your ride smooth and safe. When working properly, it will handle the weight of your motorcycle, yourself, and a pillion or luggage if needed, and ensures your wheels will stay in contact with the road. When it isn’t working properly -or not capable of handling the weight-, your ride can get a lot less comfortable when you (partially) lose control of your bike. Here are some of the main pointers for service.

Oil
Your bike’s engine isn’t the only component that works with oil, as special suspension oil is used to keep your shocks operate smoothly. The components inside your suspension are lubricated to prevent friction, but over time -after numerous times of compressing and rebounding- the oil can contain small metal shavings that can cause the suspension to work less, or even get stuck.

Seals
Seals are used to keep fluids where they should be, and if broken this obviously affects the way your suspension operates. Oil on the outside of your shocks is a clear indication that service is required, but internal seals between different compartments can be faulty without being easy to spot. With all seals in good condition, the movement of oil inside your shocks contributes to a properly functioning suspension.

Bushes
Various suspension components make use of -often Teflon lined- bushes. Over time they can become bigger due to wear and tear, something that can only be noted through measuring during service. An easy thing to overlook, yet one that can have big consequences on the way your suspension works.

The Benefits in a Nutshell
When working properly, there are more aspects to suspension that you might not even realise you enjoy on every ride. The handling of your bike is a direct result of how your suspension is working, and any bumps or imperfections on the road are ironed out by fully functional suspension. With the right suspension, your tires will keep in better contact with the road which ensures better traction. And whenever you use the brakes, your suspension contributes to preventing unnecessary diving of your bike and helps maintain the right balance. Not only does this give you a better experience when riding for fun, but it can also make a world of difference in the unfortunate case of an emergency stop.

Get it done
Now that you’ve learned the basics about why servicing your suspension is crucial, make sure to add it to your maintenance to-do list. Preventive service keeps you in control of your bike at all times, and it also avoids unnecessary big repairs over time.
